How to Make Rice Water
While there is no scientific evidence that rice water works for strengthening and thickening hair, or that it is good for the skin and the digestive tract, you can find plenty of anecdotal evidence.
Some people believe that fermented rice water works better because the fermentation adds extra nutrients. It may also benefit dry skin, dull skin, dark spots, and thin hair.
There are four different ways to prepare it, depending on whether you are using the rice water for skin, hair, or digestive health.
It doesn’t matter what kind of rice you use to make the concoction. It can be white rice, brown rice, wild rice, or any other kind of rice you happen to have on hand.
Some types of rice have more nutrients than others, with white rice having the least amount of nutrients.
It may be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. Or, you may freeze it if you don’t think you’ll use it within a week.
This method is good for external use including rice water toner and rice water for face.
- Rinse 1 cup of uncooked rice.
- Then soak it for 30 minutes.
- Strain the water into a clean bowl.
This method is good for helping with gastroenteritis issues.
- Rinse 1 cup of rice, and then boil it for 15 minutes, using two times the amount of cooking water the instructions call for.
- Strain the water into a bowl and cool it to room temperature.
- Then, dilute the water until it looks just a little cloudy.
Use this method if you are making the rice water for a beverage.
- Rinse 1 cup of rice thoroughly.
- Soak it in 6 cups of water overnight.
- Drain the rice, rinse it again, and then simmer it in 8 cups of water until well over-cooked or even dissolved.
If you want to change the amount, use one part rice to six parts water for soaking and one part rice to eight parts water for simmering.
Prepare the rice water as directed in Method 3, and then culture it into fermented rice milk. Rice milk has a thicker consistency. It becomes thicker because of the amount of starch in rice and because you are dissolving the rice grains in the water.
How to Make Fermented Rice Water
Rice water benefits increase quite a bit if it is fermented instead of using the usual version. To ferment the rice water, use the cooked method, and then let the rice water set out on the counter for a couple of days. Once it’s fermented, keep it in the refrigerator.

Rice water has many benefits. Take a picture of your skin or hair before you use this special serum, and then again after you’ve been using it for several weeks. This will show you the rice water’s before and after effects.

Rice water has a lot of anti-inflammatory and anti-aging qualities so it makes a great foot and hand soak. It helps get rid of itchy feet caused by cold weather and the dry skin that builds up around your heels.
Rice Water Toner for the Face
Dip a cotton ball into the rice water and wipe your face with it. Used as a toner, this special water will make your skin look more youthful because it shrinks the pores, stimulates blood flow, and promotes cell growth.
You can even use your normal moisturizers and serums after you wipe your face down with it. After a few days of applying at night, you’ll notice your skin becoming tighter and brighter in the mornings.
All of the vitamins and minerals mentioned previously are good for skin care and skin health. Instead of using commercial antioxidants and anti-inflammatory products with other chemicals that may be harmful, use all-natural rice water.
It is also good to use on acne outbreaks since it acts as an astringent. If you suffer from eczema, apply rice water to the affected areas. Allow the rice water to dry on the skin. Rice water has also been known to help with atopic dermatitis.
Because rice water is an anti-inflammatory, it’s great for cooling sunburns. Make sure the rice water is cold when you use it, as warm water will make the burn feel hotter.
Rice water is good to use internally, too. But, if you want beauty benefits, it needs to be put on your skin. If you want to get the health benefits, you need to drink it.
If you do take it internally, use the cooked method since rice – even organic rice – contains asbestos and other chemicals in it that are not beneficial.
